Science Curriculum Intent Statement

Dignity, Community, Hope, Wisdom

‘Journeying together with hope and aspiration’

At Gainsborough Parish School, our ambitious Science curriculum aims to provide pupils with the foundations for understanding the world through carefully sequenced biology, chemistry and physics learning. Through high quality and effective teaching, pupils will experience first-hand challenging and inspiring inquiry-based opportunities that will ensure the progressive development of knowledge from Early Years through to Year 6. We will equip pupils with the appropriate experiences to develop scientific skills, knowledge, concepts and attitudes to stimulate and excite their natural curiosity to explore the wonders of the wider world around them and beyond; preparing them to engage with the global scientific community. Appropriate substantive and disciplinary knowledge alongside scientific vocabulary will be strengthened through the pupils’ educational journey at Parish.  Revisiting previously taught learning through a variety of retrieval-based activities ensures that key knowledge is truly embedded.

Developing science capital will encourage all pupils to think that science is relevant and important to their lives, now and in the future, supporting them to succeed in their life experiences and in becoming confident, responsible citizens of the future. Providing pupils with the knowledge of science careers, scientists and inventors in our community and the wider world will enhance enrichment opportunities from the Parish Pathway to develop ambition throughout their time at Parish.

The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
