Geography Curriculum Intent Statement

Dignity, Community, Hope, Wisdom

‘Journeying together with hope and aspiration’

Through our geography teaching at Gainsborough Parish Church Primary School, we aim to produce a generation of geographers by encouraging children to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, including the defining physical and human characteristics, as well as their place in it. Our geography curriculum enables children to make connections  and strengthen their understanding of the issues concerning the exploration of national and global issues, through carefully sequenced and coherent content from Early Years through to Year 6.

We provide the opportunity for children to develop contextual knowledge and fascination about globally significant places, both terrestrial and marine. Our geography curriculum allows pupils to conduct fieldwork to research where our food is sourced, how humans are able to live sustainably and whether globalisation is a good thing by using a range of investigative and problem solving skills to be applied both inside and outside the classroom. It develops knowledge of places and environments throughout the world, from their own locality, to their county, country and beyond. Children will be provided the opportunity to develop an understanding of different geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes and aerial photographs. We give the children a broad range of opportunities that develop knowledge and skills that are transferrable to other curriculum areas, through our comprehensive enrichment programme to positively enhance mindsets by discovering the very best the world has to offer.

The national curriculum for geography aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes
  • understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time
  • are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
    • collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes
    • interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
    • communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length
