PSHE Curriculum Intent Statement

Dignity, Community, Hope, Wisdom

'Journeying together with hope and aspiration'

At Gainsborough Parish Church Primary School our PSHE curriculum aims to empower students to develop into thoughtful, compassionate, and responsible individuals who contribute positively to their communities. By fostering hope, wisdom, dignity, and a sense of community, we prepare students to navigate their personal lives and broader society with confidence and integrity.

PSHE education prepares our pupils for their futures, as well as their present day lives. It deals with the real-life issues that affect our children, families and communities. It is concerned with the social, health and economic realities of their lives, experiences and attitudes (including in the online world). Our children learn to recognise their own worth, to cooperate with others and to become responsible for their own choices and learning. It is our firm belief that PSHE underpins everything we do and therefore is an integral part of helping all children to achieve their fullest potential and to improve their future opportunities and chances of employment.

PSHE education enables children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of the communities within which they live and wider society. The children learn to understand and respect ALL people so they can go on to form the healthy and fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning. We encourage all our pupils to play a positive role in contributing to school life and our community. In doing so, we help our children to develop their understanding of how communities function and thrive, and develop their sense of self-worth. In addition, our children learn what it means to be a positive member of a diverse and multicultural society and they are encouraged to reflect on the many spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that they may be faced with in life.

As part of our PSHE learning, Parish School recently celebrated Hello Yellow Day, focusing on mental health awareness and how we can support our own well-being. This year’s theme, "Wear it Loud, Wear it Proud," encouraged students to embrace their individuality and express themselves confidently. We explored the story The Dot by Peter Reynolds, which helped us reflect on the importance of being proud of our identity and talents. In addition, we celebrated Anti-Bullying Week with the theme "Choose Respect," promoting kindness and understanding. As part of this celebration, students participated in Odd Socks Day, a fun way to recognise and embrace our differences while promoting respect and inclusivity for all. These activities fostered meaningful conversations and helped our students develop a deeper understanding of mental health, self-confidence, and the value of respect in our community.

PSHE Workshop Journey

At Parish School, we are committed to providing a well-rounded education that extends beyond the classroom. To enhance our PSHE curriculum, we regularly invite external partners such as Lincolnshire Police and the Stay Safe Partnership to deliver informative and engaging workshops for our students. These workshops cover a wide range of important topics, including Anti-Social Behaviour, Online Safety, Substance Misuse, and Environmental Sustainability through Reduce, Reuse, Recycle initiatives. By working with professionals from the community, we ensure that our students receive valuable, real-world insights that help them make informed decisions and become responsible, respectful citizens. These interactive sessions not only support the learning within our PSHE curriculum but also equip our students with essential life skills they can apply both in and outside of school.
