Maths

How does our vision impact the teaching of Maths at Parish?

Inspired by our Church school vision, we use our core four values to guide all aspects of our thinking and practice.  Below is an explanation of how each of the core four impacts upon the teaching and learning of Maths at Gainsborough Parish.

Dignity

Pupils of all abilities are encouraged and nurtured to see each new aspect of maths they learn as an important next step in their learning journey. Pupils are supported to understand that success in mathematics will support further success later in life.

Community

We value opportunities to work collaboratively to support and inspire us. Children regularly have talk partner time and take part in activities that encourage and enable them to share their understanding, reasons and to ask questions. Discussion work in mathematics exemplifies the team approach to solving problems.

Hope

Pupils are encouraged to see Maths as a vital tool, critical to their everyday life. The opportunity to study Maths provides a foundation for understanding the world and an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics.

Wisdom

We believe that Maths is a unique way of communicating and sharing that can inspire and motivate children. We provide opportunities and experiences that inspire our children to be creative problem solvers.

Maths Curriculum Intent

  • We believe that Maths is a unique way of communicating and sharing that can inspire and motivate children. Maths involves a great deal of spoken language and pupils are taught to express themselves clearly in Maths, a vital skill for life and being able to generate solutions and provide ideas within a community setting. Discussion work in mathematics exemplifies the team approach to solving problems.

Aims

The curriculum for mathematics at Parish aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language

  • can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
